In 2014, 2016, 2018 #2 and 2020, Prof. Auffarth was elected as one of the most influential ophthalmologists in the world. Until today, he received more than 180 awards for his scientific works. Worth particular mentions here  include the  Theodor-Axel-Prize of  the  German Ophthalmological Society (DOG), the Prof. Dr. h. c. Löhn Prize from the Steinbeis-Foundation and over 50 Video-Prizes for scientific films.

His main research interests focus on the biomaterial and implant research in cataract and laser surgery of the eye. His surgical expertise includes cataract and refractive, as well as cornea and glaucoma surgery. He was the first surgeon worldwide to implant a toric, an aspheric and a multifocal IOL.

Prof. Dr. Auffarth is currently on the board of the German-speaking Society of Intraocular Lens Implantation, Interventional and Refractive Surgery (DGII) and on the board of the European Society of Cataract and refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).
